I Shall Come Riding Back to You

About twenty years ago when I was a young father, my own father passed this poem on to me. It had been given to him many years earlier. I consider it one of my most cherished possessions, even though it cannot be held with hands...

At some dim, distant, prick in time,
I shall come riding back to you.

Upon a word, an unsuspecting phrase...
Some careless utterance will bring me,
Lightning-swift into your mind.

And you'll remember me,
With returned love,

And tender memories
Of oft-quoted lines of sage or bard,

That then fell lightly
Upon your youthful ear.
